Thank you for the Ocean of Support

In the weeks following the devastating fire at the USF College of Marine Science lab, the St. Petersburg community proved that resilience is strongest when people come together. What began as a tragedy that shook students, researchers and staff quickly transformed into a powerful demonstration of local support, generosity, and determination to rebuild.

The fire, which damaged critical research spaces and equipment used by the USF College of Marine Science and the Florida Institute of Oceanography to study Florida’s coastal ecosystems and marine environments sent shockwaves through the scientific community. For many the building was more than a workplace — it was a hub of discovery, collaboration, and innovation dedicated to protecting the waters that define Tampa Bay, the Gulf Coast and internationally.

Almost immediately after the incident, support poured in from across the region. One of the most visible examples came during the Ocean of Support fundraiser on May 15 at the Maritime and Defense Technology Hub. Co-hosted by the St. Pete Innovation District and Councilwoman Gina Driscoll, the event drew over 370 attendees eager to contribute to recovery efforts.

The fundraiser featured live music, local food vendors, silent auctions, and brief remarks highlighting the impact of the marine science program. Attendees heard firsthand stories from students and researchers whose projects were interrupted by the fire but whose commitment to continuing their work remained unwavering, as well as to members of the St. Petersburg Fire Department whose incredible efforts brought the fire under control and prevented from spreading.

I want to say a personal “thank you!” to the Innovation District team who organized this incredible event with 10 days notice – Lauren Bell, Jack Feldman and Nisuka Williams. They went above and beyond to make this event a success and show the District’s commitment to our marine science community!

Chief Executive Officer
