About This Event

Why should you care about maps of Florida’s seafloor?

The answer may be obvious if you are a boater or fisherman – know how to navigate the waters or find the best fishing spot. However, there are numerous other reasons that up-to-date seafloor maps of Florida is important including:

  • Understanding coastal vulnerability and hurricane impacts
  • Locating natural resources
  • Assessing the health of fishery populations
  • Evaluating the performance of restoration projects

Seafloor mapping could also have substantial economic benefits for Florida. The predicted return on investment (ROI) is 5.1:1, or $28 million annually. Members of the St Pete Ocean Team* have been leading the effort to catalog existing maps and prioritize gaps to fill. The Florida Coastal Mapping Program will be holding a state-wide summit on March 31, 2020 in the Innovation District. The Story Map explains all about the effort and the upcoming summit (just scroll down to see the full story): https://flgio.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=498f1434b46d493eb3a642a2ad26a095
