A new tool may have helped prevent the overfishing of Gulf gag grouper. Challen Hyman, a researcher at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science, and his colleagues created a statistical model that factors in how anglers actually behave when regulations change.
By including human behavior, the model produces more accurate predictions of fishing pressure and helps managers set season lengths that are both practical and conservation-minded.
