Regional Collaboration: Turning Tampa Bay's Assets into Shared Advantage

Tampa Bay has no shortage of talent, institutions, or ideas. What can sometimes be hard is connecting those assets across geographic boundaries, so they function as a true regional ecosystem. In an increasingly competitive environment, collaboration is not simply a nice addition to economic development—it is how regions build the scale, visibility, and capacity to compete.

The St. Pete Innovation District has helped to lead several efforts that demonstrate what regional collaboration can look like in practice. Starting with the 2023/2025 Innovation Ecosystem Map that connects over 100 resources for entrepreneurs, this work has expanded recently to include the 2026 Tampa Bay Ocean Strategy and an emerging effort to connect the regional life science partners. While focused on different sectors, each of these recognize the same fundamental principle: our greatest opportunities emerge when we work together around shared strengths.

These efforts also illustrate an important role for the Innovation District. The District is not simply representing St. Petersburg or Pinellas County at a regional table. It is serving as a connector and convener—bringing institutions and people into the conversation, helping regional partners understand local capabilities, and creating pathways for collaboration across sectors and county lines.

Regional collaboration does not require communities to give up their individual identities or strengths. Quite the opposite. It allows each community to bring its strongest assets to the table while creating something none could build alone. For the Innovation District, helping make those connections is both an opportunity and a responsibility—and an important part of building a more innovative and competitive Tampa Bay.
